friday

I don't always ride a hundred miles before breakfast, just often. Monday I got to ride 136 miles of this before breakfast. It was good.

And along the way I saw limpid alpine lakes,

BIG trees,

and Bigfoot.

And if you ever need to be someplace Remote...I know how to get there.

I must admit that I've been using my blog updating time to cut together the video I took instead of blog updating. When I figure out how to post video without giving away all rights to it, you'll get to see it too.

More words and pictures soon.

friday

"Goin' southbound, follow that sound
Long line a' cars just a' movin' outta town..."
-Stanard Ridgway

Southward I am, indeed bound. But ahead of that long line of cars. Work I must, but when the last delivery is in and the last loaf out of the oven...
Cool breeze time. Imagine a me-shaped puff of smoke and you'll be close.

I should have a few shots up by Thursday, but the whole enchilada (even maps) will be a little longer in coming.

Have a good time. Don't hurt yourselves.
See you next week.

wednesday

Today is International RideToWork day. You should be riding to work everyday, but at least do it today. C'mon, everybody's doing it. (BTW, that's a 2000cc/260hp Münch Mammut 2000 in the picture.)

Click the link in the sidebar under "Bike Stuff" or right here if you want to know more.

Also, The Assault on Jefferson begins Friday afternoon, there will be at least one more post before that, then nothing for at least a week. (Sorry. Go read a book...or better yet, go riding.)
Then pictures pictures pictures!

tuesday

'Bout damn time I got some motorcycle stuff on here. It's been all coke, hookers and bad internet service for a week. Luckily, I got home from work last night and UPS Claus had left me a RAM mount for my camera (a present for you and me). WooHoo! Toys!

So, here are all the bits.

And here are all the bits installed. One Allen wrench, one drop of blue LocTite, two minutes.

This is the view with the camera mounted (I can't take a picture of the mount with the camera on it for assorted reasons). I probably ought to wash the windscreen. Bug guts are interesting sometimes, but...

In case I want to document any...indiscretions (or beat an undeserved ticket).

When it comes off (two seconds, twist & squeeze) this is all that stays on the bike. It can be attached with any of the eight handlebar bolts with the included adapter. I chose that one.

(Oddly enough, the FJR1300 uses the same adapter/ball & tab doowhacky, Germano-Japanese crossover is pretty uncommon in accessories.)

monday

PLEASE STAND BY...

I had meant to have the first installment of the gear post for you yesterday, but QwestDSLw/MSN elected to take the weekend off for some reason. No explanation available from Qwest beyond "Unplug your modem and plug it back in" which, of course, did nothing except make me swear loudly every time it didn't solve the problem.

They did want to send an expen$ive tech out "In a few days" to check the inside wiring. My "inside wiring" consists of a single red/green/yellow/black phone wire running from the network interface on the back of the house directly into the modem. That wire is now brand new and tests good. No need for that tech to visit. I just wish that I could convince Qwest that the spotty connectivity I have been "enjoying" for the last couple of months is at their end of the wire.
This is the first time that it's been totally out of service for more than an hour and if it happens again I'll be going service provider shopping. Not because it's so bad, but because of the way that Qwest continually says one thing and then does nothing. Not a good way to keep business. At least when my cellphone service goes sour Cingular owns up to it. That's why I still use them.
QwestManTM
Have a fun Monday, I'll have something motorcycle-related tomorrow. I promise.

monday

Two, maybe three weeks hence will see the Assault On Jefferson. In the interim, there will be much working, which affords few Scenic Vista Photo OpportunitiesTM (given that I work indoors). In their place I propose to present a GearCorner series (series...ha! maybe three posts, WebBikeWorld I ain't).

I've been moto-touring for quite awhile, and while I haven't ridden across Africa or around the world, I have covered more than enough miles to do both of those several times. In the course of doing this I have upgraded, added and eliminated a bunch of gear. My moto-travel watchwords have long been "How many things does it do and how small does it fold up?" I don't have the top-shelf stuff for the most part (Only because I have to pay for it, if you are a motorcycle or outdoor equipment manufacturer or distributor and would like to sponsor 100milesBB in any way please send free stuff and decals with your company's name right away-cash is also accepted:).

I'll photograph the comparatively huge pile of stuff involved in the seemingly simple act of sleeping and having a cup of coffee in the morning as it gets sorted, sacked and compressed into a surprisingly small space. I've done it many times, and sometimes I still marvel at the smallness of the finished package. Mind you, I'm not an ultralight, bivy-bag-and-a-red-bull camper (anymore), I like some degree of comfort, but it doesn't have to take a sidecar (though those are neat) or a trailer to haul it. This is probably not the perfect kit for you. It's not even the perfect kit for me, but it does what it's supposed to do quite well and when I find (and can afford) a smaller one that does more things I'll buy it and then tell you all about it.
